A simple template-based site with a handful of pages can often launch in two to four weeks. A custom-designed marketing site typically takes six to ten weeks once design, content, and revisions are factored in. A web app with accounts, custom logic, and integrations can take anywhere from three to six months or longer, depending on complexity. These are rough ranges, not guarantees — the actual timeline depends heavily on how prepared the content and decisions are before development starts.
The biggest source of delay isn't usually development — it's waiting on the client. Content that isn't ready, feedback that takes weeks instead of days, or new requirements introduced mid-project all push timelines out, often by more than the actual extra work would take, because of the back-and-forth involved. The second biggest cause is unclear scope at the start: if 'what we're building' isn't well defined, changes surface throughout the project instead of being caught in planning.
Having final copy and images ready before development starts — or at least placeholder content that's close to final — prevents a huge amount of back-and-forth later. Setting clear turnaround expectations for feedback rounds (e.g., 48 hours to review a design draft) keeps momentum going. And resisting the urge to add new features once development is underway keeps the original timeline intact; new ideas can go into a second phase instead of derailing the first.
It's worth being wary of any quote that promises a fully custom site in a week — it usually means either the scope is very small or corners are being cut somewhere. A realistic timeline, with built-in room for revisions and testing, tends to produce a better final result than a rushed one. Asking a developer to walk through their process week by week is a good way to gauge whether a timeline is realistic before the project starts.
